IT Support Case Studies: Cloud-based disaster recovery solution
Northdoor plc
“We made a strategic decision to move our disaster recovery environment to the cloud because of the tangible benefits. It gives us the scalability, flexibility and responsiveness that we need as an IT company. Jon Millward - Director of Integrated Solutions, Northdoor”
Northdoor unleashes performance and scalability from a cloud-based disaster recovery solution
Cloud solutions offer a range of advantages for businesses of all sizes: greater IT flexibility, increased agility, more effective collaboration and increased levels of control over expenditure. Organisations are able to avoid huge up-front capital investments and treat IT costs as an operational expense.
As an IT consultancy and solutions provider, Northdoor had recognised the value of implementing a cloud-based disaster recovery solution and wanted to demonstrate its effectiveness before offering similar services to clients.
The objective: a more responsive, sophisticated solution
Northdoor has always had a disaster recovery solution in place. The IT systems have to be resilient to prevent any negative impact on clients or business resulting from a system malfunction.
Moving the disaster recovery environment to the cloud has enabled a sophisticated solution with more scalability and flexibility.
The solution: a two tier approach
The solution involved two different levels within the cloud-based system. “What we’ve actually got is a two-tier solution, which makes it highly cost effective” Jon Milward, Northdoor’s Operations Director of Integrated Solutions.
Northdoor’s critical systems are now constantly synced and replicated in the cloud as a live replica server with less critical systems duplicated in Rise’s datacentre.
Benefits: the unique scalability, flexibility and responsiveness of the cloud
The two tier solution provides a high level of resilience. The ability to switch over quickly to the cloud for the critical functions and a relatively fast level of recovery for less critical functions is more cost-effective.
Operations can easily scale up or down between the two levels of solution or even stopped as required. The flexibility also allows extra resources in the cloud environment to be obtained when required, which could not be achieved in the traditional way.
