In line with its Big Data Strategy, IBM acquired Aspera whose FASPtm protocol technology is used to transfer large files fast over the slow public internet. The Aspera protocol has many use cases for example, it is used by a large number of movie studios and others that need to send gigabyte files between desktops, servers and clouds.
Getting data to and from geographically separate sites has always been a tricky proposition, with cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services, Google and Microsoft allowing users to mail them hard drives rather than trying uploading terabytes of data at a time. The same issues exist for large files, albeit on a smaller scale. Consider the hours it takes to upload a day’s worth of high-res photos to Dropbox, for example. Aspera can send a 24-gigabyte file halfway around the world in 30 seconds.
With businesses experiencing rapid growth in the quantity and variety of files it has increased the demand to transfer large files both within the organisation and to the outside world. These file transfers need to be secure, reliable and fast.
However many businesses encounter that large file transfers over distance increases the latency in networks, increases packet loss, and impacts the throughput of the network, with fast and dedicated networks being equally affected as TCP (Transmission Control Protocol) does not scale and packet loss inevitably increases with transfer distance.
