Running in Memory: Northdoor’s Tribute to Rob Batters

Northdoor will once again be taking part in the Standard Chartered Great City Race.  This annual 5k event has long been a part of the Northdoor calendar — but this year, it carries special significance as we’ll be running in memory of Rob Batters, our Director of Technical and Managed Services, who passed away suddenly earlier this year.

Rob was a passionate supporter of this event and a regular face on the start line. This year, we run not only to continue a Northdoor tradition, but to honour his memory and raise money for a cause very close to his heart — Steps Worldwide.

“Somewhere there was a child who never thought it possible, who would one day be able to run their own marathon.” – Rob Batters

This memorial fundraising effort aims to honour Rob’s legacy while supporting a cause that was deeply personal to him.

Rob’s Journey: From Challenge to Triumph

Rob’s life was a testament to overcoming adversity. As a child, he was diagnosed with Perthes Disease, a painful condition that left one leg shorter than the other. This undiagnosed childhood condition led to arthritic hip problems in adulthood, seemingly putting an end to his sporting aspirations.

But Rob’s story didn’t end there. In 2008, hip replacement surgery changed everything. Suddenly, Rob could run again. With his loyal companion Bailey by his side, Rob began training. His determination culminated in an incredible achievement — completing the London Marathon in 2016, and again in 2020 and 2023.

Rob understood better than most how charity runs can raise vital funds for good causes. Through his marathon efforts, he raised thousands of pounds for causes close to his heart, turning his personal triumph into hope for others facing similar challenges.

Our cause: Steps Worldwide

Steps Worldwide

Steps Worldwide works tirelessly to support those affected by childhood lower limb conditions — a cause Rob championed through his own fundraising efforts.

Steps Worldwide provides crucial support through several key initiatives:

  • Family Support Programme — Connecting families with healthcare professionals and peer support networks.
  • Educational Workshops — Providing information sessions for parents and healthcare providers.
  • Resource Centre — Offering comprehensive information about treatments and rehabilitation.
  • Advocacy Initiatives — Working to improve care access and community awareness.

As Rob knew firsthand, early diagnosis and intervention are critical for children with lower limb conditions. Steps Worldwide focuses on these areas, helping families navigate treatment options and providing emotional support throughout their journey.

Why Steps Worldwide Matters

  • They provide vital support for children and families dealing with lower limb conditions.
  • The charity funds research to improve treatments and outcomes.
  • Steps Worldwide offers a community of understanding and hope.

Rob’s marathons weren’t just personal triumphs — they were beacons of hope. He ran with a beautiful vision: that somewhere, a child who never thought it possible would one day run their own marathon. Today, we carry that torch forward.

Running in memory of Rob allows us to celebrate his life while supporting a cause that was important to him. The Standard Chartered Great City Race will be a powerful moment for the Northdoor team as we come together to honour our colleague and friend.

Rob’s journey, from a child with Perthes Disease to a marathon runner, exemplifies what can be achieved with determination and support. Through this charity run, we hope to help ensure that more children have the opportunity to overcome their own challenges.

Thank you for your support.
