Northdoor’s cyber security consultacy with The Salvation Army earns industry recognition

2025 Computing Security Awards Finalist

Northdoor and The Salvation Army have been shortlisted for Security Project of the Year at the 2025 Computing Security Awards. The nomination recognises a joint cyber security initiative that addressed critical risks across The Salvation Army’s UK operations.

The Computing Security Awards celebrate innovation and measurable impact in protecting organisations from cyber threats. This project shows how non-profits can secure operations with limited resources. It confirms Northdoor’s ability to deliver scalable cyber security for complex environments.

Cyber security challenges faced by The Salvation Army

Like many not-for-profits, The Salvation Army faced a range of cyber threats across its extensive UK network. The network and senior executives were key targets, the supply chain revealed hidden vulnerabilities and staff struggled with complex security protocols.

The scale of protection required was significant:

  • 7,000 employees/volunteers
  • 700 locations across the UK
  • Thousands of laptops requiring endpoint security
  • Hundreds of servers needing infrastructure protection

With limited internal resources, the Infosec and Infrastructure teams needed solutions that were comprehensive and manageable – an increasingly common challenge for non-profits operating under budget and staffing constraints.

How Northdoor delivered security at scale

Northdoor undertook a cyber security assessment and helped implement a multilayered security framework tailored to The Salvation Army’s operational realities. Our team worked closely with their Infosec and Infrastructure leadership teams to deliver a strategy that:

  • Secured infrastructure and endpoints across hundreds of distributed locations
  • Strengthened supply chain visibility and resilience
  • Improved staff adoption of security protocols through simplification
  • Protected employees from targeted phishing and impersonation

A multilayered security system was implemented using best-of-breed solutions, including MDR, and third-party cyber risk solution from Panorays. This approach maximised protection while minimising resource demands, proving that with the right advice and tools, effective cybersecurity is achievable even in constrained environments.

The security upgrade project has been a huge success, highlighting just how non-profits can achieve top-grade cyber protection despite the unique challenges and limited resources that are often seen as barriers within the sector.

Expert commentary on the project

Richard Hartill, Client Manager for Salvation Army at Northdoor, commented:

“The cybersecurity challenges facing non-profits are extensive. Sophisticated threats, limited in-house expertise, and a crowded vendor landscape create confusion. We worked closely with The Salvation Army to build a program that improves security, encourages staff buy-in, and protects sensitive data. Being recognised by the Computing Security Awards is a testament to our service.”

AJ Thompson, Chief Commercial Officer at Northdoor, added:

“Charities are increasingly targeted because of the data they hold. Beyond data loss, cyberattacks disrupt frontline services. We’re proud of the impact this project has had and delighted to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award.”

Protecting data and ensuring service continuity

For non-profits like The Salvation Army, cyber security isn’t just about data, it’s about continuity of mission. This project focused on:

  • Safeguarding sensitive donor and beneficiary information
  • Ensuring uninterrupted service delivery across all locations
  • Implementing security measures that work with limited IT resources
