Celebrating International Women’s Day at Northdoor

As we celebrate International Women’s Day, we are delighted to share the wisdom and stories of women in our organisation who play a vital role at Northdoor. By shedding light on their respective career paths, experiences, and successes, we hope to inspire other talented women to make their mark on the tech industry.

In this article, we’d like to introduce you to Anjela Ubogu, who has worked as a Client Manager at Northdoor for nearly 10 years.

Starting her career as an engineer with a degree in Computer Science, she brings her extensive technical experience to the business every day.

What inspired you to work in technology?

“My passion for IT stemmed from a desire to work in a more creative role. I was looking to study film and television creation, but I discovered technology working in the film-making process background, which hooked me. More so than any other industry, technology stays new and exciting – it keeps evolving.

I was one of the first women to enter computer science in Australia, and the only woman on my course. When I started as an Engineer at Digital Equipment Corporation, the IT industry wasn’t a welcoming environment for women. Still, throughout my career, I think the culture in tech has definitely moved on for women. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not perfect, but the industry has recently become more about diversity: diversity of thought, background, race, and this has meant diversity for women.”

Are there any women who inspire you in your career?

“I have a mentor and good friend, Frances Dickens, who inspires me every day. As CEO and co-founder of Astus Group, the UK’s largest media barter company, Frances built an incredibly successful business from scratch while revolutionising her industry with a new, more ethical business model. Her drive is so inspiring to me, and when I founded my company, Swerve Cycling, her success and wisdom was a huge motivation for me.”

Do you have any advice for young women who are new to their careers in the industry?

“If you are a young woman looking to enter the tech industry, or going for that next promotion, you are equally as good as any other candidate, and it is as simple as that. I’ve always worked hard for everything I’ve got, in cases fought, and I am bigger, stronger, and better for having gone through the battles. Being a woman in a male-dominated industry is 100 percent about having self-belief and confidence, and that’s what I have today.

The industry is changing, and this is a really good aspect for young women starting out in tech. I love my vocation and I wouldn’t change my own career path for a moment. I’m really happy with my life, my family and my work colleagues, and I’ve taken on all the knocks, got back up, and carried on a better and stronger person for it. So believe in yourself and your own ability – you can do it.”
